Interview With The Luxury Watch Guy
We spoke with @luxurywatchguy1, one of the top experts on high end timepieces in New York City. When you’re ready to step up from the G-Shock you got for high school graduation, this is the guy.
For the uninitiated, tell us about yourself.
My name is Ethan AKA The Luxury Watch Guy, I am a wholesaler of super high end luxury watches specializing in brands like Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille, Rolex and many others.
Recently, many people have turned to luxury watches as investment pieces, as their values have increased tremendously in a short while. Why might that be?
During Covid-19 we saw an unprecedented price hike for high-end watches, some went up 300% in a short period of time. The reason was a combination of production coming to a halt, an increase in popularity due to social media, and the stock market/bitcoin recovery.
Tell us about some of your favorite watches in your collection.
Some that come to mind are the 5270R Patek Phillippe, 5270G Patek Philippe in blue and on the more simple side my Submariner "Hulk" and white gold Submariner "Smurf" which I wear daily.
What trends do you see emerging in the luxury watch industry?
We will see brands like Vacheron, A Lange, and FP Journe become more popular with new watch collectors and as a result go up in value. Depending on the model they are harder and harder to come by and the time has come for them to blow up.
A first-year analyst just got his bonus check and wants to treat himself. What watch around $20,000 would you recommend he start looking for?
I would say go with two watches if you are just getting started. The Submariner for sport and Date Just for a more dressy look. If you buy right you can get both under at right around the $20k mark and it is a great intro into the watch world.
What’s the most underrated brand?
Most Bruguets are trading well below their MSRP and their watches have some of the best craftsmanship around. One example is the 'Tradition Retrograde Seconds", a tremendous piece for the price.
Mechanical, automatic, quartz movement- what should I be looking for?
It comes down to personal preference but collectors will tell you it goes mechanical, automatic, then quartz.
What’s your dream watch?
The Patek Philippe Ref 1518 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph famously worn by Egyptian Prince Tewfik Adil “T.A.” Toussoun of Egypt, recently auctioned off at Sothebys.
